Young Journalists’ Competition

English has been my favourite language since I was a child. I am learning English at school, at home and with my tutor. This year I was studying this language in England.

I would like to tell you about an unforgettable experience I had in April this year.  My father found some information about the competition of young journalists on the Internet. All participants were to write a text in English about football and then 10 winners would be chosen for another tour. I was very interested in it, because the winner would go to Milan.

I wrote a pre-contest text and sent it to the competition panel. Some days later my mum got a phone call and told me that I should go to Borisov for another tour. I was very happy but I thought that I should prepare for the competition a lot. I learnt by heart words connected with football matches and I tried to make up interesting sentences about the game and the football players. To be honest, I felt really confident.

When I came to Borisov-Arena I was very excited. I hadn’t seen such a big and beautiful football arena before.

Our guide showed us around and told us what we should do. We were to write a report in English after the football game and the best one would be the winner. I was really excited. We had the best seats and two of the best Belarusian football teams were playing.

The match was thrilling and I had a lot of things to write about. After the game we came to the report studio where we met with the coaches of the teams. We spoke to them and I noted down their answers and commentaries on the match.

After that we had one hour to write our reports. I used some sentences which I had planned and added lots of new facts. Than we gave our reports and started waiting for the results.

We had some tea and cake. Than the judge came…

Unfortunately I didn’t win. But I realised my mistake (I shouldn’t have prepared the sentences before hand). This year I want to try again and I promise to do my best.
